Which wipes can you flush in Australia?

Most wet wipes do not break down in the sewer. A wipe is safe to flush only when it meets AS/NZS 5328:2022, the Australian and New Zealand standard for flushable products.

This page lists every wipe we can find on sale in Australia that states it meets the standard. It shows the source for each one, where the wipe is made and where to buy it.

7 brands on the list. Last check: 1 November 2026.

Sold as flushable, AS/NZS 5328 not confirmed online

These wipes are sold as flushable. We could not confirm online that the pack on sale meets AS/NZS 5328. Most of the pages show no statement that cites the standard. Some cite overseas guidelines, and WSAA says that the INDA/EDANA code is not equivalent to the Australian standard. A pack can show information that a web page does not, so read the pack.

Wipes that go in the bin

Most wipes are not made to be flushed. Baby wipes, makeup wipes, cleaning wipes and antibacterial wipes go in the bin, unless the pack states AS/NZS 5328. These brands say so in plain words, or list no flushable wipe.

WipeWhat the brand says
Anko wipes (Kmart)“Do not flush.”
CleanLIFE floor and surface wipes“Non-flushable wipes should always be disposed of in the bin.”
Ecoriginals baby wipes“We don’t recommend flushing our wipes.”
Femfresh intimate wipes“For external use only. DO NOT FLUSH.”
Huggies baby wipesHuggies lists ten wipes in its Australian range. None is called flushable.
Joonya baby wipes“Do not flush Joonya wipes, even if they are compostable.”
Kine hand, surface, makeup removal and pet cloths“are not flushable and should be disposed of in the bin”
Kleenex Hand and Face Wipes“Kleenex Facial Tissues and Hand and Face Wipes are not flushable”
Tooshies baby wipes“No baby wipes, including water wipes, should ever be flushed”
Wet Ones“No, Wet Ones® are not flushable. Please do not flush wipes down the toilet.”
Wotnot wipes“Our wipes are certified compostable and biodegradable however they are not flushable.”

How to read a pack

Two things on a pack show that a wipe meets the standard. One of them is sufficient.

  • The standard number. The words AS/NZS 5328:2022, with “meets”, “complies with”, “passes” or “certified to”.
  • The flushable logo. A figure that puts an item into a toilet. Icon Water shows the logo on its website.

If the pack has neither, put the wipe in the bin.

When you flush, obey the limit on the pack. Most brands on the list say two wipes for each flush. Use a full flush. If you have a septic tank or a pump system, read the pack and the system manual first.

Questions

Are flushable wipes really flushable?

Some are. A wipe that meets AS/NZS 5328:2022 has passed tests that show it clears the toilet and the drain, passes through pumps, breaks apart, settles and biodegrades.

Many wipes sold as flushable before the standard did not break down. In 2018 the Federal Court ordered Pental to pay $700,000 for flushable claims on White King wipes that were not suitable to flush.

What is AS/NZS 5328:2022?

It is the joint Australian and New Zealand standard for flushable products, published on 20 May 2022. It sets six tests, and the maker must attest that the product has no plastic. The standard is voluntary, but a product must meet it to use the flushable logo.

Kine’s guide to the Australian flushable wipes standard has a table of the six tests.

Is there an official list of flushable wipes?

WSAA, the Water Services Association of Australia, keeps a register of products that it has approved to use the flushable logo. On 1 November 2026 the register showed two products. One is a Kirkland Signature wipe with the model number MZ21869X01. The Kirkland Signature pack on sale at Costco now has a different model number, and we could not match it to the register entry. That pack is thus in our second list. The other is Clean Impact Flushable Toilet Wipes (SKU 850100, stockist Woolworths), which we have not found on sale yet.

WSAA said in October 2024 that it knew of four manufacturers with products that meet the standard. A wipe can thus meet the standard and not be on the register. For that reason this page lists what brands and retailers state.

Sources: WSAA register (read 1 November 2026), WSAA questions and answers, October 2024

Who certifies flushable wipes?

The standard has no certification body of its own. WSAA says that a company has its product tested at an accredited laboratory. Two laboratories do the tests: SGS in the United States and CTP in France.

Some brands also name a certifier. CleanLIFE names Global Mark.

How many wipes can I flush at once?

Follow the pack. CleanLIFE, Kine, Kleenex, Quilton and Sorbent say no more than two wipes for each flush. Retailer pages for Ocean Healthcare say one. Use a full flush.

Sources: The list on this page

Can I flush wipes if I have a septic tank?

Read the pack and the manual for your system. Kleenex and Quilton say their wipes suit well-maintained sewerage systems and commercial septic systems only. Sorbent says to read the system manual for septic and macerator systems.

Sources: The list on this page, Wipes and septic tanks

Are baby wipes flushable?

Most are not. Huggies lists no flushable wipe in its range, and Tooshies says that no baby wipe should be flushed.

Three baby or kids wipes on the list state AS/NZS 5328: CleanLIFE baby, clean., Kine Baby Wipes and Sorbent Kids.

Sources: Wipes that go in the bin, The list on this page

Are biodegradable, compostable or plant-based wipes flushable?

Not unless the pack says so. A wipe can break down in compost and still block a pipe, because it does not break apart fast enough in water. Wotnot says its wipes are compostable and biodegradable but not flushable.

Sources: Wotnot, What the words on a pack mean

Can I flush Dude Wipes, Cottonelle or Andrex wipes in Australia?

Dude Wipes and Andrex cite the overseas INDA/EDANA guidelines. Cottonelle names no standard. WSAA says that the INDA/EDANA code is not equivalent to AS/NZS 5328. We found no AS/NZS 5328 statement for them.

Does my water utility accept flushable wipes?

The advice is different between utilities. Sydney Water, SA Water, Yarra Valley Water and Icon Water accept products that meet AS/NZS 5328:2022. Unitywater in Queensland tells customers not to flush wet wipes. Read the advice of your own utility.

Sources: What 21 utilities say, Sydney Water, SA Water, Yarra Valley Water, Icon Water, Unitywater

What happens when the wrong wipe is flushed?

It can block the pipes on your property. In the sewer it can join fats and oils to make a fatberg. Sydney Water says that non-flushable wet wipes contribute to 75% of wastewater blockages.

How do I get a wipe added or corrected?

Send a link to the brand’s statement, or a photo of the pack that shows AS/NZS 5328, to ask@flushable.com.au. We add every wipe sold in Australia that states the standard.

About this list

How the list is made

  • We search supermarkets, pharmacies, discount stores, online stores and marketplaces for wipes sold as flushable.
  • We read what the brand and its retailers publish about each wipe.
  • A second reader opens each source page again.
  • We record the source and the date.

What the list tells you

A wipe is on the list when the brand, its retailers or the WSAA register state that the pack on sale meets AS/NZS 5328. We do not test wipes, and we do not see test reports.

A pack can show information that a web page does not, and stock changes. Read the pack before you flush.

Additions and corrections

Send a link or a pack photo to ask@flushable.com.au. We add every wipe sold in Australia that states the standard.
